Community Calendar for July 5 (2024)

•BOOK DRIVE: through Aug. 2 in preparation for The New Wilmington Kiwanis Club’s annual book sale. Donations accepted from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at Neshannock Presbyterian Church, 330 W. Neshannock Ave., New Wilmington. Leave items with the secretary. Do not leave books in the parking lot or by the doors. No encyclopedias, magazines, VHS tapes or text books. The annual book sale will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 8 and 9 and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 10. Sale benefits New Wilmington Kiwanis and Scout Troop 733.

•HOPE IS DOPE RECOVERY TRAINING SERIES WITH STEVE TREU: 6 to 8 p.m. July 9, 16 and 23, New Englander Terrance Room, 3009 Wilmington Road. The free, three-class series is for anyone who is in active recovery who who just wants to better understand addiction and its affects on the brain. •WILMINGTON AREA HIGH SCHOOL ALL-CLASS REUNION: July 12, River Valley Community Resource Center (former Pulaski Elementary School). Social hour at 5:30 p.m.; banquet at 6:30 p.m. $35 per person, checks payable to WAHS Alumni Association. Honorees will be the Class of 1974. The 2024 scholarship recipients will be recognized.

•INTRO TO FLY FISHING: 5 to 8 p.m. July 12, 528 Bridge Boat Launch Area, Moraine State Park. Join park staff to dive into the basics of fly fishing such as how to set up a fly-fishing rig, cast a fly rod, tie knots, pointers on what flies to use, and what’s going on under the water. After the lesson, you’ll have a chance to use your new skills by fishing in Lake Arthur. During the program, a fishing license is not required, and all equipment is provided by the park but feel free to bring your own. Dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, bring a drink and snacks if desired. Program is for anyone 12 and up, but those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. •MUDDY CREEK OIL FIELD LIVING HISTORY DEMONSTRATION: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 13, Park Road, Moraine State Park. The Bessemer Gas Engine and Marshall-Barr No. 19 oil well equipment is restored and open for visitors to hear and see the industry that powered this region.

•CREEK CRITTERS: 4 to 5:30 p.m. July 17, meet at the Hells Hollow Trail Parking Lot, McConnells Mill State Park. Explore Hell Run Creek for salamanders, crayfish, aquatic insects and all the other critters that live there. TDress for the weather, bring water and wear sturdy shoes.

•FIREWORKS FESTIVAL: 4 to 10 p.m. July 20, Downtown New Castle.

•FULL MOON PADDLE: 8 to 10:30 p.m. July 20, Old 422 Launch by Region 2 Office (Prospect Exit off 422), Moraine State Park.Paddle off into the sunset, then turn around and watch the moon rise light up the night. A limited number of kayaks are available or bring your own. Life jackets required. Ages 12 and up, under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration required by calling (724) 368-8811.

•ST. FAUSTINA PARISH FESTIVAL: 5 to 9 p.m. July 20 and 1 to 6 p.m. July 21, St. Christopher Church, Route 528, Prospect. Live music, children’s games and activities, basket raffle, flea market, bingo, food and outdoor Mass at 4 p.m. July 20.

•AN EVENING WITH MARK TWAIN: July 24, Confluence, 214 E. Washington St. Hors d’oeuvres from 6 to 7 p.m. with the performance at 7. Sponsored by the Lawrence County Historical Society and featuring Mark Dawidziak along with Sara Showman. Tickets are $20 per person and can be purchased at Lawrence County Historical Society Annex, 408 N. •RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE: 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 26, American Legion Post 343, 134 N. Jefferson St. Donors can register by calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767) or by visiting RedCrossBlood.org and enter NewCastlePA to schedule an appointment.

•GHOST NIGHT AT THE SCOTTISH RITE CATHEDRAL: July 26. Guided tours of the building’s hot spots at 6, 8 and 10 p.m. and midnight, with the facility open until 6 a.m. Audio recording and EVP/spirit devices permitted. Concession stand available. Tickets are $20 per person, regardless of arrival time. Tickets are available in advance on the Cathedral’s website under “events,” and will also be sold at the door. All proceeds benefit the Scottish Rite’s Children’s Dyslexia Center of Western PA.

•HERON AND KINGFISHER PADDLE: 1 to 3 p.m. July 28, McDanels Launch Area, Moraine State Park. Learn about the heron, kingfishers and the ecology of Lake Arthur. A limited number of kayaks are available or bring your own. Life jackets required. Ages 12 and up, nder 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration required by calling (724) 368-8811.

AUGUST

•WAMPUM HOMECOMING WEEKEND AND CAR CRUISE: Aug. 2. Registration begins 4 p.m. with the cruise at 5. Vendors, entertainment and prizes.
